New national initiative - get healthcare provider referrals to diabetes prevention programs STAT!

The American Medical Association (AMA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have announced that they have joined forces to take urgent action to prevent diabetes through the initiative, Prevent Diabetes STAT: Screen, Test, Act - Today™.

Prevent Diabetes STAT: Screen, Test, Act - Today is a multi-year initiative that expands on the robust work each organization has already begun to reach more Americans with prediabetes and stop the progression to type 2 diabetes. With more than 86 million Americans living with prediabetes and nearly 90 percent of them unaware of it, the organizations are urging others to join in this critical effort.

New resources for generating healthcare provider referrals

Most useful for organizations delivering or planning to deliver the National Diabetes Prevention Program (National DPP) Lifestyle Change program, the two organizations have released a provider toolkit for referring to and advocating for the National DPP. The toolkit includes resources to engage healthcare teams; communicate effectively with patients; and incorporate screening, testing and referral into a medical practice.
